Abstract

This study examines intercultural communication in online communities through player interactions on the Roblox platform. The research aims to identify communication patterns, barriers, and adaptation strategies used by players from different cultural backgrounds. A descriptive qualitative method was employed through participant observation on several international servers and in-depth interviews with six players. The findings show that intercultural communication occurs through text chat, emotes, avatars, and visual symbols. Major barriers include language differences, slang, stereotypes, and contrasting communication styles. Players overcome these barriers through message simplification, code-switching, nonverbal cues, accommodation, and conflict avoidance. The study concludes that Roblox serves as a multicultural space that supports dynamic and adaptive intercultural communication.
